Greetings!

Every Saturday, on top of anything else I will be writing, I will post a blog about my views on music’s influence on fashion. I have often been told that the two are unrelated, but I beg to differ.

Exhibit A:

Would you say that someone with this sense of style enjoys listening to music? I say slap a laminate on his keychain and he is either in a band, selling merch, or drum/guitar teching and praying he will one day get his “break.” Please do not think I am making fun of anyone who supports this fashion sense in their daily wardrobes. In fact, it might be quite the opposite. The correlation between a person’s taste and music and their everyday attire can be very helpful . For example, when trying to decide which bar/nightspot you and your friends want to attend on a given evening, it is beneficial to know the genre of music being played in order to assume what type of crowd will be hanging out there. This can be turned around as well. When I first moved to the city, I wanted to seek out what I call “my people.” By that, I mean those individuals who have a similar taste in music and interests so that we might have something in common. It was simple to do this once I took notice of anyone who looked like they enjoyed shopping at AA, Urban Outfitters, or their local thrift store. I could then assume these types of people would flock to the venues/bars/restaurants where I might also find some of my favorite tunes blasting through the speakers.

Roll your eyes all you want, you know that this is true. I say so long as you support what you love (in music AND fashion) and live up to it, there is nothing wrong with being a typical “scene kid” , “hipster” or whatever labels are out there nowadays. Just make sure you do it for the right reasons. And yes, I do believe there is such thing as “overdoing” it. (See http://latfh.com)

Music has been influencing fashion since at least the 60s. That’s just how it is. Play into it, or don’t… it’s completely up to you. But I think we would all be ignorant if we did not embrace the inevitable.
