It’s true, I miss Recover. In fact, at a recent Young Love live performance at Webster Hall in Manhattan, my brother and I found through our slight intoxications that we were shouting, “Play ‘My Only Cure!’” To which, I’m sure half the people in the room had no idea what we were talking about.
For those of you who do not know (and thus, I feel sorry for you) Young Love is a NYC-born alternative-electronica-dance-rock band fronted by Dan Keyes, formerly of the post-hardcore band, Recover. Young Love’s first album, “Too Young To Fight It,” came out in 2007, and completely blew me away. I fell in love with the edgy sound, drum beats, catchy guitar riffs, and the fact that I couldn’t help but move to the music.
After listening to their recent release, “One Of Us” (Island Records), I feel just as captivated, if not more than I did after listening to their debut album for the first time two years ago. The first song I played was “One to Ten,” since it was the song they opened their show with. I remember it being much more punchy when performed live, but I suppose that is natural for most artists. It still managed to make me tap my foot, and if you know anything about me, you know I enjoy some kickass electronic beats. The bass line is super catchy as well. It basically has everything you could ask for in this genre of music.
Another song I enjoyed was “Get Me Up,” because it does just that. Like, I dare you to sit still while blasting this from your speakers. You just can’t. I love Keyes’ vocals in this song, and the retro-70s-Bee Gees beat throughout the song is entirely epic. However, I could do without the voices yelling “HEY!” in the chorus. Cheeeeeese E. (that’s the word “cheesy” with stress on the “e”).
Be sure to listen to this gem of dance-rock album from start to finish. A few other catchy tracks I enjoyed were “The Picture” and “Turn it Up.” Learn the words and let Dan’s melodic voice melt your heart. Love on it.
The album was released today (4/28) which means if you haven’t bought it yet, you’re missing out! Check amazon.com, or your local music stores and pick up a copy. I promise you won’t regret this purchase :)
